AgArts imagines and promotes healthy food systems through the arts.

I am part of the advisory board of directors, our mission is to share and connect artists with sustainable agriculture.

There are many examples of the power of the arts-and-agriculture connection, and as the sustainable food movement has begun to mature, those connections are multiplying rapidly in a renaissance of creative ideas and projects. Artists have always been deeply inspired by nature, but now the urgency and passion of the food movement gives this enthusiasm tremendous relevance. At the same time, creative aspects of food-related activities are enjoying new recognition and value as sustainable agriculture encourages a more personal relationship with food sources.

Another part of this initiative is to reach out to communuities through events and performances. AgArts is on the road, showcasing two pieces in the A Land Transition program. Map of my Kingdom, commissioned by Practical Farmers of Iowa, explores the issue of farmland transition.

My composition River House on the Prairie, based on my experiences as an artist-in-residence at Whiterock Conservancy, features a solo horn with wildlife accompaniment.

A Land Transition program brings together Brewer’s live performance with the  award-winning video production of Mary Swander’s drama, Map of my Kingdom, along with an optional discussion of land transition.
